A very sad day as we sent Kallie on her final journey, just a month away from her 15th Birthday.
She was the easiest dog to own, loved her food and plodding around the fields. Never pushy, just a sweet soul.
She sometimes told the youngsters off for being unruly!
She loved to sit with her bum pointing towards the fire and if there was a wildlife programme on, she would always watch it, often getting up to see where the animal had disappeared to off screen! Funny to watch!
The last few weeks she did that thing that all old dogs do when they reach the end of the line, they stop eating their favourite foods and you buy every food imaginable to get them eating.
This week she had Beef, Lamb and Chicken stew, liquidised in the soup maker as she didn't seem to want anything with lumps in. Goats milk was another favourite.
Her uti and laryngeal paralysis issues became more persistent despite her medications.
Today, she came out into the garden, then wanted to sleep. She wouldn't eat her stew. I knew my decision was the right one.
She didn't even feel the vets needle go in as she lay on her bed. It was the most peaceful passing anyone could wish for their loved dog and I felt that sense of relief for that grand old girl.
Kallie was born at Montecani and sold to a show home where she did a bit of winning and had a couple of litters.
You always hope that all the pups you sell will live a long happy, safe life.
Her owner became ill, but I had checked to see if Kallie was OK and the owner said all fine and the dogs were keeping her going.
Then came the call from Viv, that the dogs had been removed from the owners property and were close to death from starvation.
Kallie weighted 18 kg when rescued, with a Grade 4 heart murmur from the starvation.
I had sleepless nights worrying of the plight of those dogs and how they felt deprived of the one thing we all need to survive...food.
With the help of breed people, Kallie came back to me.
She was 25kg when she arrived here, 10kg lighter than her ideal weight.
You could see every bone on her poor frame, ribs, spine, pin bones. She had an open sore on her back and a severe ear infection and was ravenous, but she had to have small and regular meals to build her up slowly.
With vet treatment she was soon back to full health and the heart murmur disappeared.
I did plan to find her a home, but struggled with her ear infection on and off and also the fear that she wouldn't be safe anywhere else. I knew she would be safe here for the rest of her life.
I often felt a sadness about her. She had lived through a terrible trauma and it had affected her. I'm sure of it.
I always think Spinoni are deep thinkers and I'm sure she remembered and wondered about her owner.
She would always go to the door when she first arrived as if to say 'am I going home now'
Who knows what deep thoughts a dog holds inside.
We will never know, but I'm glad I shared the last few years with my puppy, especially as I had lost her litter sister Rubra, some years ago.
Kallie healed my heart a little bit..

You can go anywhere you like now.
The beautiful calm classical music we played during our last hours together surrounds you.
At peace now. I hold that memory in my heart.

Quinta's 1st Birthday

It took a lot of time to get a 1st Birthday photo of my ' 'little tiny thing' She's going though a teenage phase of not listening and being defiant.
I raised her from day one, far too small to feed from Mum she weighed 200g at birth so I fed her from a bottle, stimulated her wees and poos with a cotton wool ball over the bathroom sink. Everything a Mother should do.
Now she's a stroppy teen, knows it all and doesn't want stupid photos...Mummmmmm!!!
She was born on Twista's Birthday after all ...Attitude!
Then at bedtime she turns into a sweet little baby, curled up, tight, with a sweet little stretch and sleepy face wanting a cuddle.
